Légende in G minor Op. 17, originally for violin and piano, was written in 1859 in Ostende, when he had fallen passionately in love with Isabelle Hampton, his future wife. Nostalgia, pain and love emanate from each element of the work, all factors contributing to the work's over-riding expressive aims: a minor key, a lyrical, tuneful melody, a ballad atmosphere, gradation of intensity by means of the increasing use of tremolo in the accompaniment, and tonal contrast - G major being used in the middle section. The work is a typical Romantic miniature, with a simple tripartite ABA structure. It possesses an intense, expressive charge as a whole. The cello transcription preserves the original key and character of the work as well as the piano part. Only indispensable changes have been made.


원래 바이올린과 피아노를 위한 작품번호 17번, G단조의 전설은 1859년 오스텐데에서 작곡되었는데, 당시 그는 미래의 아내인 이자벨 햄튼과 열정적인 사랑에 빠져 있었다. 향수, 고통, 그리고 사랑이 작품의 모든 요소에서 스며들어 있으며, 이러한 모든 요소들은 작품의 전반적인 표현 목표를 달성하는 데 기여한다. 즉, 단조, 서정적이고 아름다운 멜로디, 발라드풍의 분위기, 반주에서 점차 증가하는 트레몰로를 통한 강도의 변화, 그리고 조성 대비(중간 부분에 사용된 G장조) 등이 그러하다. 이 작품은 단순한 ABA 3부 구조를 가진 전형적인 낭만주의 소품으로, 전체적으로 강렬하고 표현력이 풍부한 분위기를 지닌다. 첼로 편곡은 원곡의 조성과 특징, 그리고 피아노 파트를 그대로 유지했으며, 필수적인 부분만 수정했다.
