The Sixth Symphony, op. 59, is Vierne's last major work conceived for the organ of Notre-Dame. Besides the Quatre poèmes grecs, op. 60 (for voice and harp or piano) and the Ballade du désespéré, op. 61 (for tenor and or-chestra or piano), merely the somber Stèle pour un enfant défunt, op. 58, no. 3, and the Messe basse pour les défunts, op. 62, were written for organ in the period that followed. In the manuscript - it is the last organ work that he wrote down himselfl - Vierne dated the Symphony ”Roquebrune, 15 ]uly-15 September 1930.” During that summer, which he spent at the Richepin family's country house in Carnolès near Menton on the Mediterranean, Vierne also played an organ concert in the cathedral in Monaco? The Symphony was published at the beginning of September of the following year.


작품번호 59번 교향곡 6번은 비에른이 노트르담 대성당 오르간을 위해 작곡한 마지막 주요 작품입니다. 이후 시기에 오르간을 위해 작곡된 작품은 작품번호 60번의 '네 편의 그리스 시'(성악과 하프 또는 피아노를 위한 곡)와 작품번호 61번의 '절망의 발라드'(테너와 오케스트라 또는 피아노를 위한 곡)뿐이며, 작품번호 58번 3번의 '죽은 아이를 위한 비석'과 작품번호 62번의 '죽은 자들을 위한 저음 미사'만이 있습니다. 비에른은 이 교향곡의 자필 악보(그가 직접 쓴 마지막 오르간 작품)에 "로크브룬, 1930년 7월 15일 - 9월 15일"이라고 날짜를 적어 놓았습니다. 그해 여름, 지중해 연안 멘톤 근처 카르놀레스에 있는 리슈팽 가문의 별장에서 시간을 보낸 비에른은 모나코 대성당에서 오르간 연주회도 열었다. 이 교향곡은 다음 해 9월 초에 출판되었다.
