Muzio Clementi was born in Rome in 1752. By the age of nine, he was already an organist. In 1773, he moved to London, where he quickly established himself as a leading pianist and composer. Concert tours took him to Paris and, via Strasbourg and Munich, to Vienna, where he competed with Mozart at the piano before Emperor Joseph II on December 20, 1781. By 1785, Clementi had already premiered five of his symphonies in London. After his golden age as a pianist, Clementi, like Diabelli in Vienna and Pleyel in Paris, became a music dealer and publisher, achieving considerable success as a businessman. Between 1802 and 1822, he traveled extensively as a publisher, conductor, and teacher, accompanied by his students, to Paris, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Munich, and Italy. Performances of his symphonies brought him widespread acclaim. Clementi died in 1832 in Evesham, Worcestershire, England. The present Sonata in G major for flute or violin and piano belongs to a collection of six sonatas, first published in 1779 as Opus 2 by Welcker in London. Its title is: Six Sonatas for the Piano, Forte or Harpsichord with an Accompaniment for a German Flute or Violin, Composed by Signor Clementi, Opera II. For comparison, in addition to the first English edition, a printing by the publisher J. Schmitt/Amsterdam from around 1785 was available, as well as the complete edition produced by Breitkopf & Ilärtel between 1803 and 1807 and edited by the composer.
