Franz Krüger Timpani and Snare Drum-Method

Franz Krüger was principal timpanist at the Berlin State Opera and taught at the State Academic Academy of Music in Berlin (now the Berlin University of the Arts). His student Kurt Ulrich compiled the Method for Timpani and Snare Drum, which, in addition to a selection of orchestral studies, includes Franz Krüger's timpani and drum exercises. These exercises have since guided several generations of aspiring timpanists and percussionists.

Although the technical demands on orchestral timpanists and percussionists have steadily increased, Franz Krüger's exercises remain extremely valuable in their combination of musicality and orchestral demands. His famous Timpani Etude No.45 exemplifies the high esteem his exercises have maintained to this day: The "Krüger 45" is still considered one of the benchmarks in exams and auditions. The selection of orchestral studies in this volume offers much of what is indispensable for percussion and timpani studies.
