In 1971, Morton Feldman composed Rothko Chapel for soprano, alto, mixed choir, and instruments for the Menil Foundation's meditation room in Houston, Texas . It features 14 paintings by the American artist Mark Rothko, whose red, black, and purple colors vary depending on the light, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and stillness. "My selection of instruments in terms of instrumentation size, tonal balance, and timbre was largely determined by the space of the chapel, but also by the paintings. ... the music was intended to spread throughout the entire space and not be heard from a distance." (Feldman)
