Schubert's famous "Arpeggione Sonata," usually performed on cello, viola, violin, and flute, will be presented to the world as an equal duo for guitar and piano.
The arpeggione, invented as a six-stringed, fretted instrument played with a bow, shares the same tuning as the guitar, and its actual pitch is an octave lower than the written score. Therefore, arranging this sonata for a new guitar and piano duet is quite natural.
For the many sustained notes meant to be played with a bow, new phrases have been added that enhance the beauty of the original piece. As with previous works in this series, the guitar and piano are made to converse, cooperate, and sometimes compete on equal footing, bringing out the full and effective charm of each instrument. Furthermore, all repetitions have been eliminated, and the recapitulation has been written in an even more developed form, so the piece moves forward powerfully and captivates the listener.
In addition, as a work that exemplifies the characteristics of Schubert, known as the "King of Song," the famous "Serenade" from his last song cycle, "Schwanengesang" (Swan Song), with its lyrical and flowing melody, has been arranged for an equal duet.
Of these pieces, which are enjoyable to play and interesting to listen to, I highly recommend trying out the "Arpeggione Sonata" as a new addition to your concert repertoire, and the "Serenade" as a piece that can be played casually.
