다이비트 포퍼는 동시대의 리스트가 피아노를 통해 이루었던 업적을 첼로를 통해 구현했던 거물 연주자 겸 명교사였다. 무반주 첼로를 위한 40곡의 연습곡들로 구성된 `첼로 연주를 위한 고등 연습곡`은 첼로 연주자들의 필수교본으로 인식되어왔던 작품집이다. 파블로 카잘스가 `이 악기를 위해 이보다 더 나은 작품을 쓸 수 있는 작곡가는 없을 것이다`라고 단언했을 정도로 첼로에 대한 모든 것들이 담겨 있다.
