Introduction
The Russian school of piano playing has been acclaimed as one of the best in the world since the late 19 th century and has produced countless major artists and teachers. To this day, Russian piano teaching boasts a remarkably high Standard, even on its lower levels. This is due in part to the solidly conceived structure of the pedagogical repertoire which places the emphasis on Russian music. The most outstanding feature of this music is its idiomatic pianistic character, which predestines it for instructional purposes. Although piano music was not always in the forefront their œuvre, Russian composers in the 19 th and 20th centuries were generally superior pianists, and some were even concert artists. Very knowledgeable about the piano`s wealth of sounds and virtuoso effects, they often seemed to compose their pieces directly into the player’s hands. It is thus not only instructive to play this music but also, and above all, a great pleasure. It gives one the feeling of possessing a mastery of the instrument and commanding the full extent of its sound potential. This collection or works by a number of important composers seeks to trace the development of Russian piano literature from the early 19th Century to the present, i.e. from the genesis of an independent Russian piano style up to our time. The book contains pieces in the major genres from this period: variations, dances, lyrical and polyphonic pieces, character pieces and etudes (sonatas had to be omitted because of their length and level of difficulty). There are well-known pieces and lesser-known works in equal amounts. As to their technical requirements, the examples were chosen so as to include as many different challenges as possible (use of the entire keyboard, pedal, passage, work, chordal writing, octaves, polyrhythms, polyphonic writing, cantabile, alternating hands, etc.). Unfortunately the restricted scope or the book and the limitation pieces ranging in difficulty from easy to medium meant that some important composers and a number of rewarding instructional pieces had to be omitted (Borodin, Balakirev, Rachmaninov, Medtner, Prokofiev, Gliere, Denisov, Schnittke). One can only encourage players continue exploring this domain on their own. Each piece is supplemented by a brief commentary which proposes various ways of mastering the work, in addition to providing information on specific aspects of the work, technical tips, analyses of the piano writing and other elements. The selection reflects years of experience teaching and playing, and supports the aim of addressing general topics applicable to a number of works as well problems specific to the piece in question.
러시아 피아노 연주 학파는 19세기 후반부터 세계 최고 수준으로 인정받아 왔으며, 수많은 거장 연주자와 교육자를 배출했습니다. 오늘날까지도 러시아 피아노 교육은 초급 단계에서조차 놀라울 정도로 높은 수준을 자랑합니다. 이는 러시아 음악을 중시하는 탄탄한 교육 과정 덕분이기도 합니다. 러시아 음악의 가장 두드러진 특징은 피아노 연주에 최적화된 고유한 특성입니다. 19세기와 20세기의 러시아 작곡가들은 피아노 음악이 그들의 작품에서 항상 중심을 차지했던 것은 아니지만, 일반적으로 뛰어난 피아니스트였으며, 일부는 콘서트 연주자로 활동하기도 했습니다. 피아노의 풍부한 음색과 기교적인 효과에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로, 그들은 마치 연주자의 손에 직접 곡을 써넣는 듯한 느낌을 주었습니다. 따라서 러시아 음악을 연주하는 것은 교육적일 뿐만 아니라, 무엇보다도 큰 즐거움을 선사합니다. 이 책은 연주자에게 악기를 완벽하게 다루고 그 음향적 잠재력을 최대한으로 끌어낼 수 있다는 느낌을 선사합니다. 여러 중요한 작곡가들의 작품을 모은 이 책은 19세기 초부터 현재까지, 즉 독자적인 러시아 피아노 스타일의 탄생부터 오늘날까지 러시아 피아노 문헌의 발전을 추적하고자 합니다. 책에는 이 시기의 주요 장르인 변주곡, 무곡, 서정곡, 다성곡, 개성곡, 연습곡 등이 수록되어 있습니다(소나타는 길이와 난이도 때문에 제외되었습니다). 잘 알려진 작품과 덜 알려진 작품이 균형 있게 포함되어 있습니다. 연주 기법 측면에서는 건반 전체 사용, 페달 사용, 패시지, 워크, 화음, 옥타브, 폴리리듬, 다성적 표현, 칸타빌레, 교대 양손 연주 등 가능한 한 다양한 난이도의 곡들을 선별했습니다. 아쉽게도 이 책의 제한된 범위와 난이도가 쉬움에서 중간 정도로 한정되어 있어, 몇몇 중요한 작곡가들의 작품과 유익한 교육용 곡들(보로딘, 발라키레프, 라흐마니노프, 메트너, 프로코피예프, 글리에르, 데니소프, 슈니트케)을 제외할 수밖에 없었습니다. 연주자 여러분께서 이 분야를 계속해서 탐구해 나가시기를 권장합니다. 각 곡에는 간략한 해설이 덧붙여져 있으며, 작품을 숙달하는 다양한 방법과 더불어 작품의 특정 측면에 대한 정보, 연주 기법, 피아노 악보 분석 및 기타 요소들을 제공합니다. 이 책에 수록된 곡들은 수년간의 교육 및 연주 경험을 바탕으로 선정되었으며, 여러 작품에 적용 가능한 일반적인 주제와 해당 곡에 특화된 문제점들을 다루고자 하는 목적을 반영합니다.
