Commissioned by the Paul Sacher Foundation, the concerto 'In tempus praesens' is Sofia Gubaidulina's second violin concerto, following the great 'Offertorium' violin concerto from 1980, originally performed by Gidon Kremer and already considered a standard work in contemporary music. Before Gubaidulina begins composing, she allows the impulse for a work to mature for a long time, conceiving it within the context of her religious-philosophical worldview. This is also true of the violin concerto 'In tempus praesens'. Various phenomena play a special role for Gubaidulina in this work. Derived from the divine Trinity, the numbers three and one are initially central for her. 'But this 'one' carries within it an infinite, multidimensional world and thus an infinite number of properties,' the composer explains. Thus, the great unison at the transition from the fourth to the fifth part of the work - for Gubaidulina a metaphor for the present ('tempus praesens') - simultaneously represents diversity within unity.
