Gioachino Rossini's operatic oeuvre is framed by sacred music. He grew up with it and gained his compositional experience there, including his handling of the singing voice; in his old age, he took musical stock of his life's wisdom in key works such as the Stabat Mater and the Petite Messe solennelle . The Missa di Rimini belongs to his first creative phase and was written in 1809 for the cathedral there. It is a Kyrie-Gloria Mass, with the Gloria being given considerable space, divided into ten numbers, in keeping with Italian tradition. The Mass is characterized by great musical joy and offers soloists and choir rewarding, but not overly difficult, tasks; the compositional ambition is also reflected in the work's inclusion of extensive instrumental passages.
