The Fifth Symphony, one of Gustav Mahler's most popular works, was composed between 1901 and 1902. This work in the Romantic style underwent a number of changes: the orchestration was first revised by Mahler in 1903 and 1904 and the percussion changed after a rehearsal with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In a detailed preface, this new critical edition sheds light on the genesis, the numerous changes made by Gustav Mahler and the performance history of the Fifth Symphony. Throughout the score there are occasional annotations by the editor on the manner of performance or the provenance of the sources, which are dealt with in more detail in the critical report. This critical complete edition was published in 2002 by Edition Peters and was published by the International Gustav Mahler Society.
