Mozart wrote the Piano Concerto in A major, K. 488, for his subscription concerts in the 1785-6 season, and entered 12 March 1786 as its date of completion in his manuscript catalogue of works. Though written in cl06e proximity to the concertos K. 482 and K. 491, it is noticeably more restrained in its orchestration (lacking oboes, trumpets and timpani), but makes especially telling and idiomatic use of the clarinets, which surprisingly appear in all three concertos. As the autograph manuscript shows, Mozart originally foresaw oboes instead of clarinets for K. 488, but changed his mind in the first movement at the beginning of the development section.

The present edition was compiled on the basis of the autograph score located in the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris. For purposes of comparison we have also consulted the first edition, issued around 1800 by J. Andre in Offenbach (publisher's no. 1419). While no cadenzas have survived for K. 482 or K. 491, Mozart wrote a cadenza for the A-major concerto directly in the autograph score. This conflicted with his usual practice, which was to write down cadenzas on separate folios. The solo piano part is identical in every respect with the text given in the sources. The piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment (Piano II) has been adapted as far as possible to conform to the dynamics and articulation of the original score. Editorial additions not found in the sources are indicated by small type or (in the case of slurs) by broken lines.
